"The Home Series"

by Drew McManus

This series has been a really interesting experience to create. The last 6 months have been an absolute onslaught of intensity. In the news, on the road, and in conversation with my people. The rate at which the Police are being militarized and sent to stomp out their own citizens for exercising Constitutional Rights, has been a baffling thing to observe and gain perspective on. In the last 6 Months I have been all over this Country and had conversations with people from Florida to Alaska about the state of our land and planet, our "leaders", our fears, our love, our insecurities, the Police, and the things we all hold dear. This series is an exploration of bluntness, truth, vulnerability, and honesty. These paintings represent the fore front of what I think about when I think about this Home...This Country. And my reaction to it. It is also an opportunity for me to pitch in and donate money to causes that I have wanted to assist. 2 of the paintings in this series ("Mni Wiconi" & "My Son") will have half of their proceeds donated to related charities.

"Mni Wiconi"

- Acrylic on Canvas, 2016

Mni Wiconi means "Water is Life".  This painting was inspired by the Black Snake Prophecy and the Prophecy of the 7th Generation of the Lakota People, as well as the eery correlation between those prophecies and what is currently happening at the Standing Rock Reservation and the DAPL (Dakota Access Pipeline).

The purposed pipeline threatens the safety and security of the clean water of not only the Standing Rock Reservation...but all down stream. What started as a protest has turned into an unprecedented stand of solidarity from not only Indigenous Tribes from all over the world, but people of all races, religions, and creeds standing up for our Mother Earth and her precious clean water.

Because of the fruition of Prophecy and my deep support of the right to clean water and the right to assemble. I will be donating half of the proceeds of this painting to geting food/supplies to the Nations gathered at Standing Rock.

"My Son"

- Acrylic on Canvas, 2016

This Painting was inspired by the senseless shooting of Trayvon Martin. And the man that was aquited of a murder he clearly committed. There was so much intensity and injustice that surrounded this event, so much inherent and systematic racism exposed and shrugged off.

I kept returning to the thought of how I would feel if that happened to my child. And that I had to watch a man who racially profiled, pursued, confronted, and killed my son... go free. This to me is how we grow through the social tribulations we see. Ultimate empathy. I try to make myself feel what they would feel. How angry and sad would I be. I know there is no way that I could ever fully feel or comprehend such a thing. But I tried to channel that frustration and confusion into this piece.

I am donating half of the proceeds of this painting to the Trayvon Martin Foundation/Circle of Mothers. They provide support and assistance to Mother's of victims of senseless gun violence, like the murder of Trayvon.

"Face It"

- Acrylic on Canvas, 2016

This piece is an expression of the madness of this last summer. I went through so much. We played so many shows and I had so many personal things happen that I just had to face. I lost my sister completely unexpectedly, broke my elbow, came to terms with the fact that I had to cut ties with people very very close to me if I am to continue to grow. In contrast to that negativity.. We kept playing music, I sat in ceremony, I grew deeper into my practice of prayer, tightened my bond with so many Uncles, Aunties, Brothers, and Sisters. And leaned deep into my partner... and grew. The Power is in facing it. Not shutting down. Not tapping out. Even though it looks chaotic...it's pretty beautiful.

"Played"

- Acrylic on Canvas, 2016

This painting is about what I refer to as "The Greatest Lie Ever Told"

That you are not good enough. We live in a society where almost the entirety of our commerce is based on us not believing that we look good, smell good, feel good... ARE GOOD. They play us. I see a huge potential in the human race if we can just get passed the fear of being good enough. Because we are.

"Force"

- Acrylic on Canvas, 2016

I have always found the demeanor of Police Officers I have encountered to be rather intense. I have always said that they speak "Force" not English. In recent years that force has been flexed and funded and the results have been frightening. Senseless violence, that is not answered for. The numbers say more than I can. I think this piece speaks for itself.
